包含関係と所属関係
例のアレで

をぱらぱらと見ているわけですが、これはとてもいい本ですね。教育的配慮にものすごく富んでいる。背景とかの説明をしているところはやっぱよく分からないところも多いんだが。集合論の考えに慣れている私には目からウロコの連続。今日見ていたところでは、この本では包含関係inclusionは所属関係membershipの一種になる。
考えると、歴史的にはこの二つの概念は、集合論ができてすぐの頃、あまり分けられていなかった。そしてそのことが単元集合を認めるかどうかを含めて、かなりの混乱を起こしていた*1。でもLawvereの捉え方からすると、これがただの混乱ではなかったと考える余地があるのかも。意味深な言葉。
Historicaly many mathematicians such as Dedekind and Banach used the same symbol for both membership and inclusion, and indeed it is quite reasonable to define x belongs to y for any two maps with codomain A and even to use the same symbol for it ... (p. 37)
